What is a Chavurah?

A Chavurah is a group of people who gather to form a community. The word “chavurah” comes from the Hebrew word “chaver“, which means friend. In joining a Chavurah, one has the opportunity to develop life-long friendships with Temple Sinai congregants who have similar interests. Chavurot (plural) members come together to learn, to socialize, to celebrate Jewish holidays, and to comfort each other. Think of the Chavurah as your extended family. Joining a Chavurah is a wonderful first step to take for a connection with your temple community. It provides you with the opportunity to be part of a small community within the larger one.

What does a Chavurah do?

What a Chavurah does is entirely up to its members. It is autonomous. Each group can decide on the activities in which the members are interested and set goals as to their accomplishments. Some celebrate Jewish holidays together; some attend temple events together. Others prefer sharing Simchat; attending social gatherings, either for the entire family or just the adults; sharing of Simchat; and some like to organize educational opportunities for their members. Most Chavurot will do some combination of all of these things. Each group is unique in working towardsdeveloping a meaningful experience for    its members.

How often does a Chavurah meet?

The frequency that a Chavurah meets is up to each group. Once formed, the Chavurah structures activities according to the interests of its members. Some groups set a regular monthly or bi-monthly get-together. The activities can take place in members’ homes, at outside locations, at Temple events, or wherever the group would like to meet. And aside from scheduled events, it is always nice to run into your fellow Chavurah members during Temple events.

How large is a typical Chavurah?

Each group may vary in size. We recommend a minimum of 12 adults; however, there are no hard and fast rules about the size. Chavurot are formed for families and/or individuals.
